10 Tips For Traveling To Europe

With its rich history, diverse cultures, and picturesque landscapes, Europe is a dream destination for so many people. There are so many amazing places to visit, and you’ll enjoy such a different way of life. It’s definitely my favorite continent to explore - swimming along the Amalfi Coast, picnicking under the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or watching a Santorini sunset - need I say more?. If you're planning your first European getaway, it's essential to be well-prepared to make the most of your experience.

If this is your first trip there, here are 10 tips for traveling to Europe.

10 Tips For Traveling To Europe

1. Plan Ahead, But Stay Flexible

Before you head to Europe, plan the basics like your itinerary and accommodations. But you’ll want to leave room for some spontaneity. Europe is full of unexpected things to do, and it’s so much more fun to have an itinerary that’s a blend of plans/no plans.

2. Master Basic Phrases

Although English is spoken in many European cities, it makes things much easier if you learn a few basic phrases in the local language. It’s much more respectful and I’ve found locals are more inclined to help if you at least attempt to speak the local language.

3. Pack Comfortable Shoes

European cities are known for their pedestrian-friendly streets, and you'll likely be doing a lot of walking. Invest in comfortable shoes to explore the sites. You likely won’t have much need for any wedges/heels.

4. Embrace Public Transportation

Public transportation in Europe is efficient, convenient, and often the best way to explore cities. Invest in multi-day transit passes or city cards that offer unlimited travel on buses, trams, and trains. It's a cost-effective way to get around.

5. Pack Light And Smart

When traveling through Europe, it’s so much easier to get around when you pack light. No one wants to be lugging their huge suitcase around, especially since a lot of destinations are all cobblestone. If you can pack everything in a carry-on (or even a backpack, although that would never be possible for me!), you will have a much more enjoyable time getting around.

6. Be Mindful Of Your Budget

Europe can be expensive, but with planning, you can make the most of your budget. Many spots in Europe offer free walking tours, delicious budget-friendly restaurants, and reasonably priced hotels/home rentals.

7. Respect Local Customs and Etiquette

Each European country has its own set of customs and etiquette. Research and respect these cultural nuances to make sure you have positive interactions with locals. Simple gestures like knowing when to tip, how to dress, and dining etiquette make a big difference.

8. Stay Safe And Aware

I have always felt safe when traveling to Europe, but it's essential to stay vigilant. Be aware of your surroundings, secure your belongings, and use reputable transportation options. Familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers and the location of the nearest embassy or consulate for worst-case scenarios.

9. Explore Beyond Tourist Hotspots

While iconic landmarks are a must-see (they’re popular for a reason, right?), don't just limit yourself to tourist hotspots. My favorite thing to do is wander through charming neighborhoods, visit local markets, and chat with locals for their recommendations. You'll find hidden gems and create even better memories.

10. Capture Moments, But Live In Them Too

It's natural to want to document your European adventure (I’m definitely guilty of filming/photographing a lot!). But remember to immerse yourself in the moment and appreciate things around you. There is something to be said about the way Europeans live - and they are much more in the moment and off their phones!
