Top Things To Do When Visiting Kyoto

Venture To The Fushimi Inari Shrine

No Kyoto travel guide is complete without a visit to the Fushimi Inari Shrine, a sacred Shinto sanctuary dedicated to the rice god, Inari. What makes this shrine truly amazing is the winding path lined with thousands of red torii gates. As you climb the hill, each gate marks a donation made by individuals and businesses, creating a gorgeous tunnel of color.

Start your journey at the main shrine and explore the surrounding grounds decorated with smaller shrines and fox statues, the messengers of Inari. Once you’re at the top, you’ll see gorgeous views of Kyoto and feel a sense of tranquility. You’ll want to visit during the early morning or late afternoon to see the sunlight on the vermilion gates.

Wander Through The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is a bamboo forest located on the outskirts of Kyoto. The towering bamboo shoots create a super unique atmosphere - the sunlight filters through the canopy and casts patterns on the forest floor. You’ll feel so relaxed taking a stroll along the designated paths.

After wandering through the grove, be sure to explore the nearby Arashiyama district, known for its picturesque Togetsukyo Bridge and the Iwatayama Monkey Park. You can even take a traditional boat ride along the Hozugawa River for another relaxing experience.

See Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)

The surroundings of Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) are so peaceful and serene. Originally built as a retirement villa for a shogun, Kinkaku-ji was later converted into a Zen temple. Now, Kinkaku-ji is a must-visit during any trip to Kyoto. You can stroll through beautiful gardens and admire the architecture that combines Zen, Shinden, and Samurai styles. The reflection of the pavilion on the Kyoko-chi Pond is gorgeous, especially during sunrise or sunset.
