Top Fall Destinations In The USA

Fall is one of my favorite times of year to travel. Growing up in Southern California, we really don't have a traditional "Fall" with the gorgeous leaves and foliage. I also feel like we can't even start to wear sweaters and boots until late it's almost Winter. So, I've tried to experience Fall in all types of places. There are so many cozy towns and beautiful outdoor Fall destinations in the USA, but these are the top 10 in my opinion.

1: New England, USA

One of the top Fall travel destinations is the New England region in the USA. The region includes a few states, but most notably Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. It's also one of the top Fall destinations in the USA for leaf peeping. The Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire is a famous drive where you can fully experience the Fall foliage. Vermont has a number of pumpkin picking, apple cider tasting, and pie spots. You can't get more "Fall" than traveling to New England.

2: Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina/Virginia

Blue Ridge Parkway is another quintessential Fall destination in the USA. This scenic highway has gorgeous views of the Appalachian Mountains that come alive with autumn colors in the Fall. Whether you're looking for leaf-peeping or just looking for a scenic drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a must in the Fall. As you drive along the highway, it really feels like you're in a Fall fairytale.

3: Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee/North Carolina

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has beautiful fall foliage, making it an ideal spot for hiking and pictures. From the gorgeous vistas at Newfound Gap to the tranquility of Cades Cove, Fall in the Great Smoky Mountains is perfect for nature lovers.

4: The Adirondacks, New York

The Adirondacks are known for their clear lakes and outdoor activities, making it another great spot for nature lovers to enjoy Fall. You can hike the High Peaks, paddle along its lakes, or just walk through the cozy Adirondack towns. It's another great spot for leaf peeping!

5: Napa Valley, California

Even though California doesn't have the traditional fall foliage, Napa Valley is gorgeous in the Fall with grape harvests and wine tours. There are also so many fun activities like hot air balloon rides, picnics, and even the Napa Valley Film Festival in November.

6: Aspen, Colorado

Known for its golden aspen trees, Aspen is another one of the top Fall destinations in the USA for leaf peeping. The vibrant foliage creates a gorgeous contrast against the Rocky Mountain backdrop, making every hike and drive so scenic. In addition to the scenery, Aspen has a number of cultural events and festivals like the Aspen Filmfest and the Aspen Music Festival.

7: Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Visiting Shenandoah National Park in the Fall is like stepping into a real-life painting of autumn. Driving along Skyline Drive gives you gorgeous Fall foliage views. You can also hike with less crowded trails, cooler weather, and the opportunity to see more wildlife (like deer and turkeys!). But I think the best part is the waterfalls are still flowing, and surrounded by the beautiful Fall leaves.

8: Sedona, Arizona

Sedona is another place that's not known for traditional fall foliage. BUT, its red rocks create a beautiful backdrop when contrasted with the Fall colors of the area’s landscape. It's also a much cooler time of year, making the hikes much more manageable (and beautiful). Whether you're hiking, experiencing the mystical vortexes, enjoying a spa day, or just savoring the scenic drives, Sedona in the Fall is sure to be relaxing.

9: Hudson Valley, New York

Hudson Valley is known for its beautiful Hudson River views, historic sites, and apple picking during the Fall. Its charming towns along the Hudson River come alive with Fall festivities like apple picking, pumpkin festivals, and farmers' markets. There are also so many cozy restaurants that serve such good Fall-comfort food. It's almost as if the air smells permanently of apple pie in Hudson Valley. And of course, the wineries and apple cider spots are not to be missed!

10: Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Last on the list of top Fall destinations in the USA is Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The UP offers a unique fall experience with its rugged terrain, numerous waterfalls, and colorful foliage. It's a must for anyone who loves spending time outdoors. The Fall foliage is just the beginning...you can also witness the amazing spectacle of migrating birds and enjoy the cozy charm of towns like Marquette and Munising. UP is another tranquil place to spend Fall in the USA.
