Weekend In Santa Fe
Santa Fe, New Mexico is known for its art scene and delicious food. Even though there is plenty to do, you can spend a weekend in Santa Fe and accomplish a good amount of sightseeing. We did a road trip from ABQ to Santa Fe and got to explore everything in between. If you have 2 days to spend in Santa Fe, here is a sample itinerary to get you started.
Weekend In Santa Fe Itinerary
Day 1
Breakfast @ Plaza Cafe
Before exploring downtown Santa Fe, head to the Plaza Cafe (downtown) for breakfast. We got the Blue Corn Pinon pancakes and the Huevos Rancheros - both were so delicious.
Walk Around The Santa Fe Plaza
Santa Fe Plaza is the heart of the city and has been the center of Santa Fe's community life for 400+ years. Walk off your breakfast and take a stroll around the plaza.
Visit the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is a beautiful example of Spanish colonial architecture and is located just a few blocks from the plaza. If you're interested in learning more about the Cathedral's history, you can also take a guided tour.
Cross of the Martyrs
For a view of the city, walk up to the Cross of the Martyrs. Park at the bottom of the hill and walk up to the Cross (takes about 10 minutes one way).
Lunch @ The Shed
The Shed is a local favorite, serving up traditional New Mexican cuisine since 1953. Order a plate of red or green chile enchiladas (or get "Christmas chile" which is both!) or the Carne Adovada plate. They don't take reservations, so try and go on an off hour. Otherwise, you can put your name down and walk around the Plaza a bit more.
Visit the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is dedicated to the life and work of one of America's most famous artists. The museum has a collection of 3,000+ pieces, including paintings, sculptures, and photographs.
Explore Canyon Road
Canyon Road is an art lover's paradise, with over 100 galleries showcasing the work of local and international artists. Take a stroll down the road and admire the paintings, sculptures, and other works of art on display.
Dinner @ Geronimo
Geronimo is located in a cool historic building and is one of Santa Fe's most popular restaurants. It's a little more high-end but definitely worth it. Be sure to try the seared scallops or elk tenderloin. They have an extensive wine list too.
Day 2
Breakfast @ Café Pasqual's
Café Pasqual's is a charming restaurant that serves up organic, locally sourced food in a colorful and eclectic atmosphere. Be sure to try the chilaquiles.
Go To Meow Wolf
Meow Wolf is one of the most popular things to do in Santa Fe. It has a variety of immersive art installations and interactive experiences, for example, Eternal Return, a Victorian house filled with secret passages, interactive exhibits, and crazy visuals. It's gotten so popular that they've even opened a Meow Wolf in Las Vegas and Denver. You can buy tickets ahead of time on their website.
Lunch @ The Pantry
The Pantry has been serving up hearty comfort food since 1948. The restaurant's retro diner decor and friendly service create a welcoming atmosphere that feels like you're stepping back in time. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable, making it a popular spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Pantry's green chile is especially famous and is available in both mild and hot versions. The restaurant also offers a full bar, with a variety of cocktails and beers on tap. Don't miss the green chile cheeseburger.
Margarita Trail
The Margarita Trail is a fun (and delicious) way to explore Santa Fe's food and drink scene. The trail has 40+ restaurants and bars that offer unique and creative takes on the classic margarita cocktail. You can pick up a Margarita Trail Passport at any of the participating locations and collect stamps for each margarita you try. Once you have collected a certain number of stamps, you can also redeem your passport for a prize. The Margarita Trail features everything from traditional margaritas made with fresh lime and tequila to unique combinations that incorporate local ingredients like prickly pear or green chile. You're sure to try the best margaritas in town.
Sunset Drinks @ The Bell Tower Bar
The Bell Tower Bar is on the top story of La Fonda On The Plaza and offers gorgeous views of Santa Fe. Coming here for a sunset cocktail is a must.
Dinner @ Sassella
Sassella is another popular restaurant located in the heart of Santa Fe's historic district. It's known for its authentic and unique Italian cuisine, with classic dishes like handmade pasta, risotto, and osso buco, and also modern interpretations of Italian cuisine. Another thing that makes Sassella great is its extensive and curated wine list with a focus on Italian varietals and small, family-owned vineyards.
*If you have more time, go hiking at Bandelier National Monument, take a day trip to Taos, or spend a day at the amazing Ojo Caliente Spa!
