Weekend In Ocean Springs
Ocean Springs is a charming coastal town located on the Mississippi Coast. The Mississippi Coast was never on my radar to travel to, but that's probably because we live on the West Coast. I originally came across Gulfport when mapping out a road trip from New Orleans to Charleston, wanting to see Mississippi and Alabama along the way. Even though we stayed in Gulfport, we spent time exploring Ocean Springs. I absolutely loved both and can't wait to go back. A weekend in Ocean Springs is perfect for anyone looking for some relaxation with Mississippi charm.
Ocean Springs is only about 90 minutes from New Orleans and less than 3 hours from Jackson. The best time of year to visit would be May, giving you plenty of sunshine before the Summer crowds.
Weekend In Ocean Springs Itinerary
Day 1
Stay @ The Roost
The Roost was originally built in the 1920s and has been restored while still maintaining its historic charm. Each of the 11 guest rooms has a unique design and is furnished with a mix of vintage and contemporary pieces. The property also has an outdoor courtyard, a heated saltwater pool/hot tub, and a cozy indoor restaurant/bar. What's super unique about The Roost is its dedication to sustainability. They use eco-friendly products, solar panels, and a rainwater collection system. It's in a great area, central to all the areas you'd want to explore. The Roost would be a perfect place to stay during your weekend in Ocean Springs.
Breakfast @ Blue Dog Bistro
Blue Dog Bistro is in a historic building and features a charming and eclectic atmosphere, with colorful murals and artwork. The menu is a mix of classic Southern dishes and more creative, globally inspired cuisine, all made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Ocean Springs Fresh Market
The Ocean Springs Fresh Market is every Saturday from 8:30-12p on Washington Avenue. The market has stands with fresh produce, baked goods, and handmade crafts from local vendors.
Explore Ocean Springs/Government Street
The main streets of Ocean Springs sit under gorgeous live oak trees and have such a quaint feel. There are lots of shops and restaurants along the main street. Downtown Ocean Springs is a charming area with tree-lined streets, colorful storefronts, and historic buildings. There are a variety of shops, galleries, and boutiques. It's also home to bars, restaurants, and live music.
Lunch @ The Lady May
The Lady May is located in Downtown Ocean Springs and has a variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers, and flatbreads. Be sure to try the Bacon Jam Burger or the Honey Butter Fried Chicken - both are crowd favorites.
Craft Advisory Brewing
If you're into craft beer, head over to Craft Advisory Brewing. What sets this brewery apart is its commitment to using locally sourced ingredients to create one-of-a-kind, small-batch brews that showcase the flavors of the Gulf Coast. From their signature "Saltwater Cowboy" IPA to their seasonal fruit-infused brews, each beer is crafted with care and attention to detail. The brewery has a laid-back, beach-y atmosphere and its outdoor seating area is a great spot to catch a live music performance or take in the beautiful Mississippi scenery.
Dinner/Drinks @ The Wilbur
The Wilbur is located on the Roost property and has great food and craft cocktails. It has a speakeasy feel to it making it a super fun spot. The menu features a range of delicious dishes, from classic Southern comfort food to contemporary cuisine with international influences. But, what makes The Wilbur special is its commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant has built relationships with local farmers and fishermen, allowing them to create seasonal menus that highlight the best that Mississippi has to offer.
Day 2
Breakfast @ Greenhouse Biloxi
Start off the last day of your weekend in Ocean Springs at Greenhouse. Greenhouse is a trendy coffee/quick bite breakfast spot in Biloxi on the way to Gulfport. The Bacon Cheddar Biscuit Sammy and Sweet Potato Biscuit Sammy are super popular (and delicious).
Explore Biloxi
Biloxi, in between Ocean Springs and Gulfport, is known for its casinos and beach vibe. It's an easy (and fun) spot to stop through and explore on your way to Gulfport.
Drive to Gulfport/Go To The Beaches
Gulfport is home to 6+ miles of beautiful beaches. Take a drive along the coast and head to one of the many beaches to enjoy some sunshine. Even if you're not there in the Summer, you can take a walk along the coastline and take in the beauty. It's about 30 minutes from Ocean Springs to Gulfport, but the drive is gorgeous.
Lunch @ Shaggy's
Take a break from the sunshine and head over to Shaggy's for lunch. Shaggy's is a laid-back restaurant with a view of the beach and serves Southern comfort/coastal food (crab cakes, oysters, po'boys, and fish tacos). Plus they have delicious cocktails.
Jones Park
After lunch, head to Jones Park. You can walk around the harbor and take pictures in front of the lighthouse. It's a small area, so you can see everything quickly if you're wanting to soak in more time at the beach.
Sunset @ The Beach
Being from Southern California, I've seen my fair share of beach sunsets, but there was something so different about watching the sunset in Gulfport. Everything seemed more crisp and the colors were gorgeous. There are plenty of spots along the beaches to pull in and watch the sunset.
Dinner @ Half Shell Oyster House
After the sunset, head back towards Biloxi to Half Shell Oyster House - a restaurant inspired by the taste and style of New Orleans. The inside is even decorated like Bourbon Street. The Redfish Orleans and oysters were delicious. They're also known for their Pink Pearl Martini (though you can't go wrong with any of their martinis).
