Top Things To Do When Visiting Mexico City

Visit the Historic Zócalo

The first thing to add to your Mexico City travel guide is a visit to the historic Zócalo. Mexico City's historic Zócalo, also known as the Plaza de la Constitución, is the heart of the city. It's the main square and one of the largest in the world, surrounded by iconic landmarks like the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace. The square is historical, serving as the epicenter of Aztec civilization followed by the heart of the Spanish colonial capital of New Spain.

You can see Aztec ruins beneath the square, uncovered in the 1970s. The square also hosts a variety of cultural events, including concerts and festivals.

Surrounding the Zócalo, there are markets, street food stalls, and a number of great cafes and restaurants.

Explore the National Museum of Anthropology

The National Museum of Anthropology, or Museo Nacional de Antropología, is a must for anyone’s Mexico City travel guide. Located in Chapultepec Park, it is one of the most important anthropology museums in the world. Its impressive collection spans thousands of years of Mexican history, from pre-Columbian civilizations to modern indigenous cultures.

The museum's design is itself a work of art, with a beautiful courtyard. Each hall is dedicated to a different culture, and the exhibits are very detailed and informative.

The museum is also centrally located in Chapultepec Park, making it easy to explore other sites like Chapultepec Castle and the city's zoo.

Taste Authentic Mexican Cuisine

One of the biggest highlights of visiting Mexico City is experiencing the food scene. From street food to fine dining, Mexico City has endless amounts of restaurants to try. Don’t leave without trying, tacos al pastor, tamales, mole, elote, churros, and carnitas.

Most notably, Mexico City is home to many world-renowned restaurants, including Pujol, Quintonil, and Contramar.

And be sure to try the local markets like Mercado de la Merced and Coyoacán Market. These will really give you a taste of the vibrant street food culture of Mexico City.
